Play Media Day 2017. Banja Luka is now on the Map! OK, its always been on the map, since 1494 in fact, but it's now firmly on the Digital Map. The second edition of Play Media Day, an initiative of the city's based Play Team Agency, has just finished. After an extremely successful first event (almost boutique in size but packing a massive information punch) in 2016, this second outing has proved, beyond doubt, that Banja Luka (Bosnia and Herzegovina's second largest city) is now leading the way as a home for the country's Digital Community. Play Team, lead by founders Dijana Tepšić, Tihana Tepšić and Bojan Dragišić, have spent the past six months preparing for an event that they hope will become a firm fixture in the Western Balkan's media calendar. Omarska camp was a concentration camp run by Bosnian Serb forces, in Omarska, a mining town near Prijedor in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina, set up during the Prijedor massacre for Bosniak and Croat men and women.[1][2] Functioning in the first months of the Bosnian War in 1992, it was one of 677 alleged detention centres and camps set up throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina during the war.[3] While nominally an "investigation center" or "assembly point" for members of the non-Serb population,[1] Human Rights Watch classified Omarska as a concentration camp.[4][5...

Deciding on a venue (the city's ancient castle) to host a state of the art 21st Century function, was an ambitious move. Transforming very basic facilities, into a modern, delegate friendly environment, was a massive undertaking. Play Media Day 02, saw some 500 delegates addressed over 3 unique stages, by 20 International, Regional and National subject matter experts, speaking about the widest variety of subjects of interest to the country's aspiring "Digiratti". It's a sad reality that Bosnia and Herzegovina (media wise), is still firmly entrenched in conservative traditional media practices and mentality. Events like Play Media Day 02 offer both encouragement and stimulation to the "Young Turks" of this ever developing Digital Eco-System that we all need to accept and embrace. It can only benefit both the country and the region. As with almost everything in life, the unsung heroes very rarely get mentioned. Behind the scenes, Dijana and her team had mustered some 40 young volunteers who, in realty, made this amazing event even more worthwhile, with their humour, friendliness and yes, their professionalism. Living The Dream in the Balkans Back in the early "noughties" I directed a multi-cultural broadcast media project here in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina. Basically I ran a pop music radio station. Allied to the project was an "outreach" element, or community interaction component, where we would organise electronic music (read Trance, House, Techno) parties that formed a base to bring disparate young adults together. Multi-cultural re-binding might be a better description. God that sounds pompous! As usual I digress. We used to bring club DJs from the UK to recreate the "music scene" that young people across Europe at that time were experiencing. The music of Carl Cox, Pete Tong and Tijesto to name but a few. Lights, Lazers, Dancers .... You know the thing. Local youth here in BIH, were feeling isolated and ignored, but had a desire to feel "normal" and connected. Those feelings are still prevalent all these years later sadly. They came to our parties in droves. I used to feel immense happiness to see our audiences just having a blast wherever and whenever we organised these events. Electronic music can be quite uplifting even for an "older" chap like me. Back to the story. It must have been back in 2002ish, when I remember noticing two young guys who came to our gigs and kept hanging around the DJ booth, observing intensely, how these DJs we brought from the UK operated. At the time it looked, to me, I have to say, quite sweet. I had no idea at all back then, that many years later, both these young men would have developed into amazingly successful DJs in their own right and not just in their home town and country, but globally as well. So here I am some 14 years later, talking to Mladen Tomić, one of those young men, and finding out, that contrary to local popular negative thought, that you CAN live your dream if you come from Bosnia and Herzegovina. He plays today in locations in Mexico, the United States, across Europe and is looking forward to performing in India and Japan. That's quite something. It's so hard to find dynamic, positive role models in the Balkans these days. They are the exception not the rule. Mladen Tomić is, in my humble opinion, a role model. Ask me any questions or give a suggestion for a video. http://bit.ly/1NfTHAV Subscribe To My Other Channels: My Blog at Bloglovin': http://bit.ly/1J1St8a If you LOVE podcasts then: https://soundcloud.com/anenglishmaninthebalkans Follow me on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/DavidBaileyMBE Like my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/balkanslife Follow on Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/anenglishmaninthebalkans Come and visit us and holiday in Bosnia and Herzegovina. http://holidayinbosnia.com Todays vlog filmed on a Canon G7X and 650DS

It is another very early start to the day today. We are leaving Hvar Island and traveling all the way to Mostar. Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina. So our ferry is here and it is massive. It is a behemoth in comparison to the one that we took coming to the island. This one is called Lastovo. Lastovo. I mean it is by Jadrolinija the same company. So yeah, yeah. How many stories is that? I don't know. It looks like a cruise ship almost. It is huge I'm glad they brought the big ship yes for the storm we're going to need it. The waves are fierce this morning. Okie dokie. We are here. We are back in Split. That was a really bumpy ferry ride. Oh yeah. I was feeling nauseous. A kid puked. Haha. Twice. Right in front of you. Right in front of me. Kind of gross but anyways we have to go catch our bus now. Tickets in hand. We're going to Mostar. We sure are. Let's go find our bus and the terminal. We've got pizza slices and cheese burek and you've got one over here. Yummy? We're lucky we had a little bit of change left. I didn't know if we could actually get we spent the last of our Kuna here. We literally like spent it all just now. So we get two pizza slices and a burek. Also our bus door is open so maybe we can go get on. Actually yeah the weather the weather is awful. Oh my gosh. We are soaking wet. It has been pouring like it is coming down like a curtain like a sheet of water. How would you describe it? Yeah. It is just like raining sideways basically. It is. It is just yeah nice to get on the bus. It is toasty in here. It is dry the heat is on. So we're planning to sleep for a few hours and before we know it we'll be in Mostar. Alright alright. We have arrived at our airbnb yes. Oh my gosh guys we owe you the biggest update. So yeah, the bus trip went really well. Um, the weather improved. It started off awful as you remember. Yes. And then the rain started to slow down a bit. It is not like it became like really nice outside but it just kind of got a little bit better. And yeah, we were going down the coast for a long while and then we kind of veered off into the left and then the landscape completely changed. It was more like lakes, rivers, mountains. And yeah, the border crossing was an absolute cinch. Super quick. Everything has been super easy. I was all border crossing were like the Balkans. Yeah. So far we handed over our passports to the bus driver uh he went and got them stamped. Brought them back on and that was it. The only other event that was noteworthy was that we had to change buses right at the last minute. Yeah. And that was right near the end of the journey. Yeah, the last leg to Mostar was on a different bus. We are back from dinner. We're back at our airbnb and we're tired so yeah it has been a long day of travels so we're just going to relax and then go to bed. See you in the next video where we'll actually show you around Mostar and maybe try some of the food. Exactly. Bye. BOSNIA HERZEGOVINA: PRISON CAMPS: OMARSKA / TRNOPOLJE: 6.8.92 ITN has gained exclusive access to some of the Serbian-run TX detention camps in Bosnia which are at the centre of persistent allegations of torture and executions. Omarska camp was a concentration camp run by Bosnian Serb forces, in Omarska, a mining town near Prijedor in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina, set up during the Prijedor massacre for Bosniak and Croat men and women.[1][2] Functioning in the first months of the Bosnian War in 1992, it was one of 677 alleged detention centres and camps set up throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina during the war.[3] While nominally an "investigation center" or "assembly point" for members of the non-Serb population,[1] Human Rights Watch classified Omarska as a concentration camp.[4][5] The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, located in The Hague, has found several individuals guilty of crimes against humanity perpetrated at Omarska.[6] Murder, torture, rape, and abuse of prisoners was common.[6][7] About 6,000 Bosniaks and Croats were held in appalling conditions at the camp for about five months in the spring and summer of 1992. Hundreds died of starvation, punishment beatings and ill-treatment. UN prosecutors compared the camps to those run by Nazis.[2] The camp existed from about May 25 to about August 21, 1992, where the Serb military and police unlawfully segregated, detained and confined some of more than 7,000 Bosniaks and Bosnian Croats captured in the ethnic cleansing of the municipality of Prijedor. Bosnian Serb authorities termed it an investigation centre and the detainees were accused for alleged paramilitary activities.[8] By the end of 1992, the war would result in the death or forced departure of most of the Bosniak and Croat population of Prijedor municipality; about 7,000 people were missing from a population of 25,000, and there are 145 mass graves and hundreds of individual graves in the extended region.[9] There is, however, conflicting information about how many people were killed at this camp. According to the survivors, usually about 30 and sometimes as many as 150 men were singled-out and killed in the camp every night.[10] The U.S. State Department and other governments believe that, at a minimum, hundreds of detainees, whose identities are known and unknown, did not survive; many others were killed during the evacuation of the camps in the area.[8] Death toll As part of the ethnic cleansing operations, these four camps helped the Crisis Committee of the Serbian District of Prijedor to reduce the non-Serb population of Prijedor from more than 50,000 in 1992 to little more than 3,000 in 1995, and even fewer subsequently.[14] While precise calculations about the number who actually died in these camps are difficult to make, US State Department officials, along with representatives of other Western governments, have estimated that between 4,000 and 5,000 people perished at Omarska.[4] A member of the United Nations (UN) Commission of Experts testified during the Duško Tadić trial at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) that their number was in the thousands, but she could not be precise, despite the fact that Serbian officials confirmed there were no large scale releases of prisoners sent there. A member of the Crisis Committee, Simo Drljača, who served as chief of police for Prijedor, has stated that there were 6,000 "

During the Bosnian War, a vast 16th century Jewish cemetery in Sarajevo was the front line in multi-ethnic fighting. The Muslim, Orthodox and Catholic Bosnia and Herzegovina capital historically nicknamed the 'Jerusalem of Europe' today has turned its back on violence, yet its media continue their tradition of resistance against war. Oslobodenje newspaper editor-in-chief Vildana Selimbegovic described her journalists' and printers' efforts between 1992 and 1995: "During the thousand-plus day… READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2015/07/08/sarajevo-s-media-still-exploring-horrors-of-war What are the top stories today?
